The 17th of March is a special day here in America. For many Americans it is a day to celebrate Saint Patrick. There are many Americans with Irish heritage, and for the Irish, Patrick is very important. Now I like Irish music, Irish food and I like to drink Guinness. I was also in Ireland and really enjoyed it. I want to travel there again sometime.

But I am PA Dutch and not Irish. Did you know that the 17th of March is also an important day for us PA Dutch too? Yes, it is St. Gertrude’s Day! For us PA Dutch, St. Gertrude was and is an important saint.

Saint Gertrude of Nivelles (628 – 17. March 659) was a woman that lived in modern day Belgium. She was a nun and abbess and performed a few miracles. After her death she was sanctified. Her miracles were:

She saw a vision of the true light of God.

Sailors, who were caught in a terrible storm, prayed to Gertrude and as soon as they had done that the storm immediately subsided.

Gertrude is the patron saint of gardeners and cats. It is an old tradition for us PA Dutch to plant our onions and peas on Saint Gertrude’s Day.
