Happy New Year 2024 I wish to all of you. It gives me such joy to be able to work with our PA Dutch for another year. And so, I begin with a typical PA Dutch New Year’s Wish. This one was written by Frank R. Brunner (1835-1908).
It is good to say to the people,
I wish you all a good time
In the New Year that begins today,
And I hope no one gets so discouraged
That he forgets to thank God
For that which He has given us;
For health, wisdom and reason,
For all the fruits of the land;
For rain, sunshine and heat,
That we’re not hit by lightning;
So much blessed with health,
And protected from strife.
We all thank God right nicely,
And wish, it might always go that way for us.
We also thank the good people,
There are very many at this time,
Who open up their hands
And give poor people many things
To eat, drink, and also clothes,
And wood and coal for the cold weather;
So that they think that everyone
Always has such a good godfather.
I wish that good people live long,
And that they always richly give
To those who use it well,
And don’t waste it unnecessarily.
To life belongs also economy
As well as charity.
I wish the boys and the girls
Much luck and lots of happiness;
And that they work and rightly save,
Then they can sometimes drive,
And get ready to marry
And not always be alone.
Some don’t know what they want
Such dummies the devil should fetch,
Who work hard and save money
And have no family in the world.
This I have wished you all,
