Tuesday is a very well-known holiday here in America. Fo us PA Dutch it is just another day, or maybe a day when we can drink a beer. Tuesday is St. Patrick’s Day. The the Irish people, it is their day of the year.

St. Patrick is one of the best known saints in the world. He is the patron saint of Ireland. He was born near Kilpatrick, not far from Dumbarton, Scotland in the yar 387. He died on the 17th of March, 461 near Saul, Downpatrick, Ireland. His parents were Caplurnius and Concessa, both were Romans who lived in roman Britain.

When Patrick was 14 years old, he was taken to Ireland as a slave. At that time, Ireland was a land of Druids and heathans. He learned their language and their culture. While he was a slave, he turned to the Christian God. He wrote:

“God’s love and his fear grew more and more within me, so that my faith and my soul were lifted up. I prayed in teh forest and on the mountains. I never felt any snow, any ice, or any rain.”

Patrick’s time in slavery lasted until he was 20 years old. He had a dream in which the irish people told him “We beg you, holy one, come and walk around with us.” But Patrick left Ireland and started his schooling to be a priest. Later Patrick was made a bishop and went back to Ireland to teach the word of God to the Irish.

Patrick converted many Irish people. He and his apostles would often preach and convert thousands of people. Many churches were built throughout the land. Kings and their entire families converted to Christianity when they heard Patrick’s words.

Patrick preached and converted people for over 40 years. He performed multiple miracles and wrote much about his life with God.

Why clover? Patrick used clover to explain the trinity and now it is a well-known symbol of Ireland.

Patrick was a humble, devout, gentle man, whose love and remembrance of God should be an example for all of us. He did not fear, not even death. His trust in God was so complete that it is hard for us to understand.

So on Tuesday think a little about the man that so many people think about…and drink a little bit of Guiness in his honor.
