We Pennsylvania Dutch are a little superstitious. Ok, many we are more than a little superstitious. When I was a child, I often heard superstitions and sayings from my grandparents. Sometimes they were weird, those I didn’t believe. Sometimes they were good, those I did believe.

In 1915, Dr. Edwin Miller Fogel published the book, “Beliefs and Superstitions of the Pennsylvania Germans.” The book is 387 pages long and has 2,085 superstitions. My goodness, that is a lot, right? Many of them were well-known to me, but a few were ones that I had never heard before.

I picked just a few out to share with you:

“Looking over someone’s shoulder in a mirror brings bad luck.”

“If you find money at a crossroads, let it lie, otherwise you will have bad luck.”

“If there is a comet in the sky, there will be war to follow.”

“If the chickens are crowing and the women are whistling, it is a bad omen.”

“If you have a peacock feather in the house, the daughters will marry.”

“Whoever sees a white spider will die.”

“If a picture falls off the wall, there will be death.”

“If you let a cat look in the mirror, it will never run away.”

“When you move to a new house, never take eggs with you.”

“Vinegar will be strong, if three women blow into the barrel.”

So what do you think? Do you believe in such things? Is there a superstition that you know? If so, write in the comment section down below! Good luck!
